BLOCKCHAIN APPLICATIONS IN BANKING AND FINANCIAL SECURITY

Abstract

Abstract: Blockchain technology has emerged as a transformative digital innovation with significant implications for the banking and financial services sector. Traditional banking systems depend on centralized databases, intermediaries, and multiple verification mechanisms, which can increase transaction costs, processing time, operational complexity, and exposure to fraud and cyberattacks. Blockchain provides a distributed and tamper-resistant architecture in which transactions can be recorded, verified, and shared among authorized participants without relying exclusively on a single central database. This research paper examines the major applications of blockchain in banking and financial security, including payments and settlements, fraud prevention, Know Your Customer (KYC), cross-border transactions, trade finance, smart contracts, digital identity, and record management. The paper also evaluates the benefits and challenges associated with blockchain adoption, particularly scalability, privacy, regulatory uncertainty, interoperability, energy consumption, and implementation costs. A conceptual analysis indicates that blockchain can strengthen transparency, traceability, data integrity, and operational efficiency when appropriately integrated with existing financial infrastructure. The study concludes that blockchain should be viewed not simply as a replacement for conventional banking databases but as a complementary technology capable of improving trust, security, and efficiency across financial ecosystems.
