Abstract

Abstract: Artificial Intelligence (AI) companionship has emerged as a transformative socio-technological phenomenon, providing emotional interaction through chatbots, virtual assistants, and digital partners. These systems are increasingly used by adults to cope with loneliness, offering accessible and non-judgmental communication. Despite their benefits, the psychological effects of AI companionship remain complex and not fully understood. This study explores the relationship between AI companionship, loneliness, and attachment patterns in adults. It examines how individuals form emotional bonds with AI systems and how these relationships influence mental well-being. Findings indicate a bidirectional relationship, where loneliness encourages the use of AI companions, while excessive reliance may intensify emotional isolation. Attachment theory provides a useful framework, revealing that individuals with insecure attachment styles are more likely to develop stronger emotional dependence on AI systems. In contrast, securely attached individuals tend to maintain a balanced use of technology without substituting human relationships. The study also highlights potential risks such as emotional dependency, reduced social interaction, and distorted perceptions of relationships. However, AI companionship can offer temporary relief, especially for individuals with limited social support. Ethical concerns, including user vulnerability, data privacy, and responsible AI design, are critically examined. The paper emphasizes the importance of integrating safeguards to prevent misuse and psychological harm. It concludes that AI companionship should complement, rather than replace, human interaction. Future research directions and policy recommendations are also discussed.
