Abstract

Abstract: The construction industry is one of the largest consumers of natural resources and a major contributor to environmental degradation. In recent years, sustainable concrete has emerged as an effective solution to minimize these environmental impacts. This approach focuses on incorporating recycled aggregates (RA) and supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) into concrete production. Recycled aggregates, obtained from construction and demolition waste, help reduce the demand for natural aggregates. Similarly, SCMs such as fly ash and silica fume partially replace cement, lowering carbon emissions associated with cement manufacturing. This study evaluates the mechanical and durability properties of such sustainable concrete mixes. Various mix proportions were designed and tested to assess compressive strength, workability, and durability performance. The results demonstrate that although there may be slight variations in early strength, long-term performance remains satisfactory. The inclusion of SCMs improves durability and resistance to environmental factors. Additionally, the use of RA contributes to effective waste management and resource conservation. Overall, sustainable concrete presents a viable alternative to conventional concrete. It supports eco-friendly construction practices while maintaining structural integrity. Thus, it plays a significant role in achieving sustainable development in the construction sector.
