HUMAN RIGHTS PROTECTION AND SOCIAL EQUITY IN CONTEMPORARY INDIA
Abstract
Abstract: Human rights protection and social equity constitute the foundational pillars of a democratic and inclusive society, ensuring dignity, justice, and equal opportunities for all individuals. In the Indian context, these principles are deeply rooted in the constitutional framework, particularly through Fundamental Rights and Directive Principles of State Policy, and are further reinforced by a wide range of legislative measures, judicial interventions, and welfare-oriented public policies. This paper provides a comprehensive analysis of the evolution of human rights discourse in India, tracing its development from constitutional ideals to contemporary governance practices. It critically examines the legal and institutional mechanisms established to safeguard these rights, including the role of the judiciary, national and state-level commissions, and civil society organizations. Additionally, the study explores key socio-economic policies aimed at promoting social equity, such as affirmative action, poverty alleviation programs, and gender justice initiatives. Despite these efforts, persistent challenges continue to hinder the realization of true equity and justice. The paper argues that while India possesses a strong normative and institutional framework for human rights protection, the effectiveness of these mechanisms largely depends on efficient governance, accountability, public awareness, and inclusive policy execution. Therefore, a multidimensional approach that integrates legal enforcement, socio-economic reforms, and participatory governance is essential to achieve substantive social equity and uphold human rights in contemporary India.
