FINANCIAL INCLUSION IN RURAL INDIA: A STUDY OF BANKING PENETRATION AND LITERACY
Abstract
Financial inclusion is a critical component of inclusive economic growth, particularly in rural India where a significant portion of the population remains underserved by formal financial systems. This paper examines the extent of banking penetration and financial literacy in rural India, identifies key challenges, and evaluates government and institutional initiatives aimed at improving financial access. The study highlights that despite progress through schemes like Jan Dhan Yojana and digital banking initiatives, gaps remain due to infrastructural limitations, low awareness, and socio-economic barriers. The paper concludes with recommendations to strengthen financial literacy programs and expand banking infrastructure to achieve true financial inclusion. Keywords: Financial Inclusion, Rural India, Banking Penetration, Financial Literacy, Digital Banking, Jan Dhan Yojana, Economic Development.
