Abstract

Abstract - The rapid expansion of digital technologies and social networking platforms has significantly transformed the process of identity formation among youth. In India, where traditional gender norms coexist with modern influences, social media has emerged as a critical space for negotiating gender identity. This paper explores how social media platforms influence gender identity formation among Indian youth, highlighting both opportunities and challenges. It examines self-expression, exposure to diverse gender narratives, peer interaction, and risks such as cyberbullying and misinformation. The study concludes that while social media provides empowering spaces for identity exploration, it also introduces complexities that require balanced digital literacy and policy interventions. Keywords: Social Media, Gender Identity, Indian Youth, Digital Culture, Self-Expression, LGBTQ+, Online Communities.
