E-LEARNING ADOPTION IN INDIAN UNIVERSITIES: POST-COVID CHALLENGES AND PROSPECTS

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic catalyzed unprecedented digital transformation in Indian higher education, compelling universities to rapidly adopt e-learning technologies. This study examines the post-pandemic challenges and prospects of e-learning adoption in Indian universities through a mixed-methods approach. Data was collected from 450 faculty members and 1,200 students across 25 universities in India between January 2023 and June 2024. The findings reveal significant infrastructure gaps, digital divide issues, and varying levels of technological readiness among institutions. However, the study also identifies promising opportunities for sustainable e-learning integration, including increased faculty digital literacy, student engagement improvements, and cost-effective delivery models. The research contributes to understanding the long-term implications of forced digitalization in Indian higher education and provides recommendations for policy makers and institutional leaders.
