A STUDY OF PHYSICO-CHEMICAL AND ECOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF DRINKING WATER IN GWALIOR TOWN
Abstract
This study evaluates the physico-chemical characteristics of drinking water in Gwalior Town, India, to assess its suitability for human consumption. Water samples from various wards were analyzed for parameters including pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), total suspended solids (TSS), and alkalinity across seasonal variations. Results indicated that while most samples were within permissible limits, 33% exceeded TDS standards, with values ranging from 64-2369 mg/L. Significant seasonal variations were observed, with higher contamination levels during summer months. Sources near waste disposal sites and sewage lines showed elevated parameter values, suggesting anthropogenic influence on water quality. This research emphasizes the need for regular monitoring and targeted infrastructure improvements to ensure safe drinking water access for Gwalior residents.
