Abstract

Engineered bamboo has emerged as a promising sustainable alternative to traditional construction materials due to its excellent mechanical properties, rapid renewability, and environmental benefits. Recent advancements in engineered bamboo composites, particularly high-performance fibre-reinforced structures, have significantly enhanced their strength, durability, and structural efficiency. This review explores the latest developments in engineered bamboo, including innovative fabrication techniques, material characterization, and hybrid reinforcement strategies incorporating synthetic and natural fibres. Key aspects such as load-bearing capacity, thermal stability, moisture resistance, and long-term durability are analyzed. Additionally, the potential applications of fibre-reinforced bamboo composites in structural engineering, transportation, and aerospace industries are discussed. The study also highlights the challenges related to scalability, standardization, and sustainability while proposing future research directions for optimizing engineered bamboo composites.
