RISE AND GROWTH OF THE PRESS IN KARBI ANGLONG DISTRICT OF ASSAM

Abstract

This study delves into the evolution of journalism in Karbi Anglong, district of Assam, India, through the lens of the senior journalist’s remarkable contributions. From its humble beginnings in the mid-20th century, the press in Karbi Anglong has played a pivotal role in social awakening, advocacy, and cultural preservation. This paper explores how journalism emerged as a platform for resistance against authoritarianism, promoted linguistic and cultural identity, and facilitated socio-political discourse. Central to this narrative is Longsing Teron, a senior journalist, activist, and social reformer whose dedication to ethical journalism and public welfare has significantly influenced the region. By chronicling his achievements, such as mediating peace processes, promoting the Karbi language, and championing anti-corruption campaigns, this study underscores the transformative power of the press. The paper also examines the challenges faced by regional journalism, including financial constraints, political pressures, and ethical dilemmas, while celebrating its resilience and impact on community development.
