ENVIRONMENTAL BEHAVIOUR AND ECOTOXICITY OF ANIONIC SURFACTANTS IN WASTE WATER BODIES IN DISTRICT SAGAR (M.P.)

Abstract

This study investigates the environmental behaviour and ecotoxicity of anionic surfactants in waste water bodies in the district of Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, India. Water samples were collected from various locations across the district, including industrial effluents, domestic sewage, and natural water bodies. The concentrations of anionic surfactants were determined using the methylene blue active substances (MBAS) method. The environmental fate of these surfactants was assessed through biodegradation studies, adsorption experiments, and partition coefficient measurements. Ecotoxicity assays were conducted using standard test organisms, including Daphnia magna and Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata. Results indicate that anionic surfactant concentrations in waste water bodies in Sagar district vary significantly, with industrial effluents showing the highest levels. Biodegradation rates were found to be influenced by environmental factors such as temperature and microbial populations. Adsorption to sediments played a crucial role in the environmental distribution of anionic surfactants. Ecotoxicity tests revealed varying levels of acute and chronic toxicity to aquatic organisms. This study provides valuable insights into the behaviour and environmental impact of anionic surfactants in the waste water bodies of Sagar district, emphasizing the need for improved waste water treatment and management practices.
